Marvin Sease has passed at 64

The blues community lost an important member this week. At the age of 64, just 8 days shy of his birthday, the blues legend Marvin Sease died.

Marvin Sease started his career singing gospel, and he always thought of himself as a gospel singer singing in groups in his teens and joining the Gospel Crowns as an adult. He then started his own R & B band with his brothers aptly named Sease. After a couple of years he struck out on his own and had hits such as “Ghetto Man,”

Andy Palacio Lecture by Dr. Joseph Palacio

The 2nd Andy Palacio lecture was delivered today at the Image Factory gallery by Dr. Joseph Palacio one of Belize’s most respected anthropologists and intellectual. Yasser Musa, director of the Image Factory welcomed the gathered with the words“today we reflect, recognize and reflect on Andy Palacio and look forward to expanding the art space.” Roy Cayetano, president of the Andy Palacio Foundation introduced the distinguished lecturer giving an overview of Dr. Palacio’s professional and academic work. He pointed out that Dr. Palacio made a shift in his life moving from the urban life of Belize City to full time living to in his home village Barranco.

Belize Culture: Lord Rhaburn – Tell them that yo Bawn Dheh

Gerald “Lord” Rhaburn is a Belizean calypso, soca, reggae and brukdown musician. He became famous when performing with the Lord Rhaburn Combo in the 1970s and 1980s.

Rhaburn has toured frequently abroad promoting Belizean music.
In 2004 he hosted the first Lord Rhaburn Music Awards, an annual Belizean music awards show.

Belize Culture: Mr Peters (Run fu yu life) 2006 in Belize

Wilfred Peters is a Belizean accordionist and band leader, known as the “King of Brukdown”. He has toured Europe and North America with his band, the Boom & Chime Band, and was awarded an MBE by Queen Elizabeth in 1997 for his cultural contributions.Brukdown is a Kriol mixture of European harmonies, African syncopated rhythms and call-and-response format and lyrical elements from the native peoples of the area. In its modern form, brukdown is rural folk music, associated especially with the logging towns of the Belizean interior. Traditional instruments include the banjo, guitar, drums, dingaling bell, accordion and a donkey’s jawbone played by running a stick up and down the teeth. Brukdown remains a rural, rarely recorded genre.

Belize’s music icon Andy Palacio: Portrait presented

Today American artist Ashanti Johnson visited the Image Factory Art Foundation along with his agent Barbara Mobley to formally present a portrait of Belize’s music icon Andy Palacio. The drawing was handed over to Gilvano Swasey, curator of the Image Factory and board member of the Andy Palacio Foundation. Also in attendance for the brief ceremony which took place on the edge of the Haulover Creek overlooking the Caribbean Sea were artists Michael Gordon, and Erron Golanche
