Albert Incumbent and three-time PUP representative Mark Espat this morning announced that he will not offer himself as a candidate in the March 7th General Elections.

Three-time Lake I Area Representative Cordel Hyde has stepped down; he will not offer himself to run in the 2012 General Election. It’s the kind of thing that could have been expected – but still, it arrived as a genuine stunner.

Coming into the September 1989 general elections, the young attorney Glenn Godfrey was, arguably, a more prominent Opposition PUP personality than the more experienced Said Musa. The relevance of this was that people like myself did not see the changes taking place in Said’s thinking before 1989 and between 1989 and 1993, because he was not on the front line the way he had been between 1979 and 1984, for example.

Mark Espat And Cordel Hyde Pro-Nationalization Statement

Senior Deputy Leader of the Party Mark Espat and Cordel Hyde sent out a surprisingly strong statement in favour of the government’s nationalization. That’s a major departure from the party’s present and historic position, and we’ll quote from it at length.
It says, “The decision by the Government to re-nationalize Belize Telemedia Ltd. is in the overriding national interest of Belize and its citizens.”

After ten suicides at Chinese manufacturer Foxconn last year, Apple has published a review ofsupplier responsibility practices, which reported child labor violations, toxic conditions, and other violations of their code of conduct. Protesters die in Libya unrest

At least two people have been killed in clashes between Libyan security forces and demonstrators in the town of Bayda, east of Benghazi, the second largest city, as activists plan major anti-government protests throughout the country on Thursday.
The victims’ names were: Khaled ElNaji Khanfar and Ahmad Shoushaniya.

Iran Protests: Hundreds Of Thousands March, Tear Gas Fired

TEHRAN, Iran — Clashes between Iranian police and hundreds of thousands of protesters wracked central Tehran on Monday as security forces beat and fired tear gas at opposition supporters hoping to evoke Egypt’s recent popular uprising.

The opposition called for a demonstration Monday in solidarity with Egypt’s popular revolt that a few days earlier forced the president there to resign after nearly 30 years in office. The rally is the first major show of strength for Iran’s cowed opposition in more than a year.
